Plate Bearing Tests are often performed at the base of the structure, either on the ground or in a shallow trench. Plates with a diameter of up to 720mm are available in a variety of sizes. The load-carrying plate is installed on the surface and is connected to a reaction load through a load cell. This test is more appropriate for evaluating bigger aggregate backfills than a CBR test since the plate used is larger (relative to a CBR test), but it needs a greater response load.
