Consolidation tests are important to determine how fast and how much soil consolidates when it is restricted laterally and compressed axially. Among other names, this test is referred to as the Standard Oedometer test or the One-dimensional compression test. This test is conducted on saturated soil specimens and is especially beneficial in cohesive soils. The Consolidation Test Apparatus (Front Load Type) are used to determine the consolidation settlement and time required for a given loading situation (i.e given height of embankment). A similar set of criteria is used to design "Ground Improvement Measures," which are required when embankments are constructed on soft soils.
